Say Nothing. Change Nothing.
A project for the United Nations & Unilever’s Unstereotype Alliance.
Stereotyping is a real problem. It blocks equality from becoming a reality, and in the case of racial stereotyping, can put people’s lives in danger.
We were tasked with creating the first-ever TV campaign for the Unstereotype Alliance. Our mission was to speak directly to individuals, asking them to stop talking/texting/tweeting about equality and instead take action themselves. Because the truth is every voice raised against stereotypes erases its power.
Each of the three campaign films uses an unsettling visual device to convey the idea that silence is an action. When you don’t face the problem, you become the problem.
UnStereotype Alliance
Say Nothing, Change Nothing
A series of three films encourages viewers to speak up because silence is an action.
One of Gen Z’s biggest memes is facebombing. It replicates the face of one person on other people’s bodies. The results are lighthearted and fun.
But we decided to use this visual device in an unsettling way to convey a powerful message: If we don’t face the problem, we become the problem.
Each of the three films takes place in a different setting, but we’ve seen it all before. The meeting where hiring happens, the comments from behind the screen, and the only Black person at the function. As viewers, we’re invested and engaged with these characters because we know them from our own lives.
When each of the bystanders fails to speak up, we are quickly removed from our familiar scenes and a false sense of security into an off-kilter, sinister world.
